I am thrilled to announce that Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, our former Mayor of San Francisco and next Governor of California, has endorsed my campaign to become your next City College Trustee!
It is a great honor to have earned Gavin’s support, and it’s an even greater honor to stand with him for students here in San Francisco and throughout California.
I first met Lt. Governor Newsom when I was working with the University of California Board of Regents as Chief of Staff at UC Riverside. I knew immediately that I could count on Gavin to put students first because he was so passionate about the power of education.
I didn’t know it at the time, but I later learned that we have this shared passion for education because school didn’t come easy for either of us. For Gavin, dyslexia led him on a unique educational journey of self-pace and self-discovery that made him who he is today. For me, as an immigrant speaking limited English and earning poor grades throughout high school, community college gave me the direction I needed as a first-generation college student, and ultimately charted the path that made me the person I am today.
I was lucky, in more ways than one, but my path of self-discovery is how I know that we must be firm in our commitment to education. That is why I am running for the City College Board of Trustees and that is why I fully support Gavin’s California Promise, to envision education as a lifelong pursuit.
I am so honored to have Lt. Governor Newsom’s support, and I look forward to working with our future governor once again to ensure City College of San Francisco and the State of California continue to invest in education for all students.
